Android 15 will be released to support Pixel devices in the coming weeks, providing users with the latest updates and enhancements
Google announced on Tuesday that it will release Android 15 and make its source code available before the upcoming consumer launch.
This will enable the new mobile operating system to be installed on supported Pixel devices in the coming weeks.
The company also disclosed that Android 15 will be released on a limited number of devices from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi shortly.
The Android update will introduce new features, such as Private Space, which allows users to isolate a portion of the operating system for sensitive information.
The software update will enable users to save their preferred split-screen app combinations for fast access and permanently pin the taskbar to the screen.
Additional enhancements consist of passkeys that are more user-friendly and partial screen recording.
Google announced on Tuesday that Android 15 will be accessible on the Android Open Source Project.
This project offers the necessary information and source code to develop custom versions of the Android OS and port devices and accessories to the Android platform and ensure compatibility requirements.
According to Google, Android 15 provides developers with additional options to enhance the performance of their applications on any platform release.
According to Google, it also enhances the user experience, privacy, security, media and camera experiences, internationalization, and typography. Android 15 will enable users to sign in with passkeys with a single tap and implement additional safeguards against malicious actors.
Google will introduce an educational series called Spotlight Weeks as part of its developer outreach. This series will explore technical topics related to Android development, beginning with a week of content focused on Android 15.
In a blog post, Matthew McCullough, VP of Product for Android Developer, stated that Android 15 is a continuation of our mission to create a private and secure platform that enhances productivity and provides new capabilities for the development of beautiful apps, superior media, and camera experiences, and an intuitive user experience, particularly on tablets and foldable devices.
With Android 15, developers are granted access to enhanced typography and internalization, as well as enhancements to the camera and media.
Google is also requiring developers to opt-in to the majority of app-facing changes in order to provide them with additional time to implement the requisite app modifications before their app targets SDK version 35.
