Suriname presidential candidate Maya Parbhoe plans to adopt Bitcoin as the national currency, abolish the central bank, and combat corruption.
Maya Parbhoe, a young woman from Suriname who is currently vying for president, is advocating for the use of Bitcoin as the national currency in the country. Additionally, she recognizes that the country should adopt the Bitcoin standard and eliminate the systematic corruption regime in the event that she is elected.
Maya also intends to abolish the central bank of the nation, which was established in 1957, in accordance with her strategy. Additionally, she prioritized the implementation of free currency competition, as the Suriname dollar (SRD) has experienced an inflation rate exceeding 50% over the past three years and has since declined to below 20% in 2024, as indicated by Statista’s data.
Maya’s economic development agenda includes the construction of the world’s first blockchain-based capital market and the financing of Bitcoin bonds to stimulate economic growth.
The adoption of Bitcoin as a legal tender by El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele and the launch of the free currency competition in Switzerland were the sources of inspiration for her.
Suriname and Poland are following the lead of other nations.
Bitcoin is being adopted by a number of presidential candidates who are vying for the top positions in the government as part of their political and economic campaigns. Many others followed suit after the United States proposed Bitcoin as a national strategic reserve and El Salvador adopted it as a legal tender.
One of them is Slawomir Mentzen, the chairman of the right-wing Polish political party New Hope, who proposed the concept of a Bitcoin strategic reserve for the presidential ticket.
In 2018, Mentzen was also the individual in Poland who suggested that municipal schools and offices mine Bitcoin, despite the fact that it was regarded as an absurd notion.
“Now I am running for president of Poland and propose that we should keep its currency reserves in Bitcoins. This may seem abstract to someone now, but in a few years it will turn out again that it was a completely obvious decision to make,” he said on X post on Nov. 18.
