Apple Lets Spotify Sell Audiobooks in U.S. App

Apple Lets Spotify Sell Audiobooks in U.S. App

Apple approves a Spotify app update that lets U.S. users buy audiobooks directly, signaling a shift in App Store policies on digital content sales

Apple has approved a new app update enabling iPhone users in the United States to purchase individual audiobooks directly within the app, Spotify announced on Monday. Audiobook prices are also available for users to view, and they can readily buy additional listening hours beyond the initial 15 hours.

“The company stated in the announcement that this modification reduces the obstacles for a greater number of users to adopt their first or tenth audiobook while also enabling publishers and authors to connect with fans and access new audiences seamlessly.”

The long-awaited update results from a recent U.S. court ruling that mandated Apple cease charging fees for purchases made outside the App Store.

For users who were previously required to purchase audiobooks online before they could access them within the iOS app, buying them directly and viewing their pricing will be a welcome enhancement.

Audiobook purchases were discontinued by Spotify in 2022 due to Apple’s stringent regulations regarding in-app purchases. It is now possible for users to acquire an audiobook with a mere few touches.

Furthermore, it was previously necessary for iPhone users to visit the internet to purchase additional listening hours, which were often referred to as “top-ups.” The update allows them to set up and purchase directly within the application. Every top-up costs $13 and provides an additional 10 hours.

This month, Spotify began enabling iPhone users to purchase subscriptions outside the App Store. This was made possible by Apple’s approval of an update, which provides access to pricing information and external payment connections.
