OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app has generated $2 billion in revenue to date, averaging $2.91 in earnings per install across platforms.
According to a recent analysis conducted by Appfigures, an app intelligence provider, ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps have generated $2 billion in global consumer spending since their introduction in May 2023.
As per the analysis, that figure is approximately 30 times the combined lifetime expenditure of ChatGPT’s mobile competitors, which include Grok, Copilot, and Claude.
As per the data, ChatGPT’s mobile application has generated $1.35 billion thus far this year, a 673% increase from the $174 million it generated during the same period (January-July) in 2024. The program currently generates an average of nearly $193 million per month, a significant increase from the $25 million it generated last year.
This is approximately 53 times more than the revenue of Grok, ChatGPT’s closest competitor, which has generated roughly $25.6 million this year. Grok’s average monthly consumer expenditure is estimated at $3.6 million, equivalent to 1.9% of ChatGPT’s.
This data indicates that ChatGPT’s dominance on mobile devices is still far from being surpassed by other consumer chatbots, even though the numbers do not provide a comprehensive understanding of the AI companies’ overall revenue.
Additionally, AI programs are available for subscription by consumers, teams, and businesses on the web. The companies generate revenue through their APIs and other means.
Instead, this new data provides a glimpse into the popularity of the applications among consumers, who discover and purchase these AI assistants through the mobile app stores.
It is also important to mention that Grok, which was launched by xAI in November 2023 (following ChatGPT), did not initially have standalone iOS or Android applications. As an alternative, consumers engaged with the AI chatbot via the X platform.
Grok was exclusively accessible on mobile devices via its iOS application as of early January 2025, and it has been available on Google Play since March 4.

Nevertheless, Appfigures discovered that ChatGPT’s lifetime global spending per download is $2.91, which is higher than that of Claude ($2.55), Grok ($0.75), and Copilot ($0.28).
ChatGPT’s expenditure per download in the United States is even higher, at $10, resulting in the market accounting for 38% of the app’s revenue.
Germany is the second-largest market, representing 5.3% of ChatGPT’s lifetime total expenditure.
In terms of downloads, ChatGPT’s advantage is also apparent. Grok has been installed 39.5 million times, while the app has been installed an estimated 690 million times worldwide. (This provides a more comprehensive understanding of Elon Musk’s recent complaints regarding the App Store’s purported favoritism of ChatGPT in its Top Charts, as he owns X.)
The average monthly downloads of ChatGPT worldwide have increased by 180% from approximately 16 million in January through July of 2024 to an estimated 45 million.
ChatGPT’s application has been downloaded 318 million times thus far in 2025, 2.8 times the number of downloads it received during the same period last year.
However, India is the leading market in the number of installations, contributing 13.7% of lifetime downloads. The United States, in second place, accounted for 10.3% of all downloads.
