Adam Selipsky Departs From AWS

Adam Selipsky, the chief executive officer of Amazon Web Services, is resigning as the head of Amazon’s cloud division, according to an internal memo published on Amazon’s website

Selipsky’s departure will be effective on June 3.

AWS senior vice president of sales, marketing, and global services Matt Garman is positioned to take on the position of CEO.

“Matthew has senior leadership experience on the product and demand generation side and knows our customers and business better than anyone else in the world,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote in an email to employees on May 14.

Jassy selected Selipsky, an initial AWS employee from 2005 to 2016, to assume leadership of the unit in 2021. The memo states that he will utilize the time off to recharge and spend quality time with his family.

“Given the state of the business and the leadership team, now is an appropriate moment for me to make this transition and to take the opportunity to spend more time with family for a while, recharge a bit, and create some mental free space to reflect and consider the possibilities,” according to Selipsky.

Selipsky presided over AWS when the transition to remote work caused an unprecedented surge in demand for cloud services at the height of the pandemic.

The unit’s revenue growth decelerated to an all-time low in 2023; however, sales have started to recover with the increasing demand for generative artificial intelligence services.

The news was initially published on The Verge.
