Alstom Secures $3B Metro Trains Supply Contract in Hamburg

Alstom secures a 2.8 billion euro ($3.0 billion) contract to deliver 374 metro trains and rail technology for Hamburg’s Hochbahn, starting production in 2026 with initial deliveries in early 2028

On Wednesday, Alstom, the French train manufacturer, announced that it has entered into a comprehensive framework agreement with Hamburger Hochbahn in Germany to supply 374 new metro trains and associated rail technology.

The deal is valued at up to 2.8 billion euros ($3.0 billion).

Alstom’s ongoing expansion and dedication to providing cutting-edge rail solutions throughout Europe are emphasized by this substantial agreement.

The agreement encompasses a comprehensive suite of rail technology intended to improve the efficacy and reliability of Hamburg’s public transportation system, in addition to providing state-of-the-art metro trains.

According to the company, the new metro trains will be produced at Alstom’s Salzgitter, Germany, facility starting in 2026.

This plant is well-known for its proficiency in producing state-of-the-art rail vehicles and will be instrumental in achieving the high standards anticipated for this project. Hamburg’s metro operations will enter a new era with the dispatch of the initial units in early 2028.

The new trains are anticipated to considerably enhance the capacity and performance of Hamburger Hochbahn’s fleet, thereby enhancing the service provided to the city’s commuters.

This project is a component of a more extensive initiative to modernize Hamburg’s public transportation infrastructure by the city’s objectives for technological innovation and sustainability.

The strategic significance of this agreement in reinforcing Alstom’s presence in the German market was underscored by Alstom’s CEO, who expressed enthusiasm for the partnership.
