Apple gives its Image Playground feature new life by integrating ChatGPT, aiming to enhance creativity through smarter image-generation tools
Apple promoted Image Playground as a rapid and effortless method of creating original, personalized images with the assistance of Apple Intelligence when it was introduced last year.
The program was initially met with skepticism, as some users were dissatisfied with its low-quality results and limitations.
For instance, when instructed to generate an “up close image of a hand,” Image Playground repeatedly produced an image of a hand with six digits, which caught one Reddit user off guard. In another instance, a user could not receive images of simple descriptions, such as “old man” or “flower.”
Some individuals even questioned the app’s purpose, observing that it appeared infantile compared to popular AI image generators. (Of course, not all individuals are adverse to the application; some have characterized it as an enjoyable experience.)
The tech behemoth announced at this year’s WWDC that it will enhance Image Playground with a ChatGPT integration, enabling a more advanced and better AI image generation service. Fast forward to this occasion.
Thanks to the new ChatGPT integration, users will be able to access a broader range of designs that are not limited to the emoji-like creations that Image Playground is renowned for.
The following new styles can generate images: Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, and Print. Furthermore, individuals can select a new “Any Style” option to specify their preferences precisely. A banner labeled “ChatGPT style” will display these new styles.

Previously, users were restricted to the following styles: Genmoji, Sketch, Animation, and Illustration.
According to Apple, Image Playground will transmit a user’s description to ChatGPT to produce an image. It is important to note that the technology behemoth will not share any information with ChatGPT without the users’ consent.
Apple is repositioning its AI image creation tool as a more comprehensive competitor to other similar free apps by incorporating ChatGPT into Image Playground, thereby giving the app another opportunity to attract users.
Additionally, it is logical for Apple to utilize ChatGPT to enhance Image Playground, particularly because the company has already implemented OpenAI’s tools in other capacities.
Apple announced last year that it would integrate ChatGPT into Siri and other first-party applications and features across its operating systems. When Siri cannot independently address a query or a user specifically requests that Siri send an inquiry to ChatGPT, the assistant utilizes ChatGPT.
Apple has also incorporated ChatGPT into system-wide tools such as Writing Tools, enabling users to generate, revise, and summarize text in applications like Mail and Notes.
The enhanced Image Playground app is anticipated to be released in conjunction with iOS 26 this autumn.
