Apple Intelligence is Boring but Reliable

Apple’s AI, Apple intelligence, is boring but reliable; despite the numerous benefits of artificial intelligence, it is beginning to develop negative reputation.

AI chatbots are susceptible to hallucinations, which is the act of generating responses when they are uncertain about how to respond. They present inaccurate information as if it were accurate.

The AI overhaul of Google Search was so unsuccessful that the company was compelled to acknowledge that it did not intend to recommend that users apply adhesive to pizza or consume rocks. Subsequently, the feature was retroactively turned off for specific search queries due to the numerous errors.

Microsoft’s AI-powered recording feature, Recall, will be deactivated by default following security researchers’ discovery of problematic vulnerabilities.

Introducing an iPhone that AI propels may be perceived as a risk in this context.

However, Apple is adopting a more cautious approach with iOS 18, unveiled at WWDC 2024. Rather than attempting to overburden users with an excessive number of AI features, the Cupertino-based technology company is gradually integrating AI into areas that are believed to be beneficial.

This implies that the technology will not be incorporated in a manner that could significantly compromise the meticulously designed consumer experience of using an Apple device.

Additionally, Apple is integrating the new AI features in iOS 18 more practically, rebranding AI to “Apple Intelligence” for its purposes.

In addition to some frivolous additions such as AI emojis, Apple Intelligence is being integrated into everyday applications and features. This includes tools for writing assistance and proofreading, AI summaries and transcripts, prioritized notifications, intelligent replies, improved search, photo editing, and a version of “Do Not Disturb” that automatically determines critical messages.

These features, when combined, may not be as thrilling as a chatbot such as ChatGPT, which can respond to nearly any query and provides access to a vast amount of knowledge that has been culled from the internet.

Additionally, these capabilities are less revolutionary but as contentious as those that enable users to generate AI images in the manner of their preferred artist. However, Apple has established the minimum requirements for the capabilities of an AI-powered device.

At present, it should assist you in identifying the most significant elements of lengthy texts, including notes, emails, documents, and many notifications. It should be capable of simplifying the process of searching for items using natural language queries, such as the contents of your photographs.

It should be capable of transcribing audio, identifying grammatical and grammar errors, rewriting text in various styles, and suggesting common responses. It should be capable of performing fundamental photo editing operations, such as removing undesirable objects or individuals from your photographs. Additionally, it should be capable of generating images upon request but with stringent safeguards in place.

Apple Intelligence is Boring but Reliable

Some of the new Apple Intelligence features feel more like wiser tools than AI when presented in this manner.

Apple has deliberately implemented this strategy. The company asserts that it prioritized use cases in which it could identify specific issues that are more easily resolved rather than addressing the complexities associated with collaborating with an AI chatbot.

Apple can mitigate the hazards and safety concerns related to AI misuse and prompt engineering by concentrating on delivering anticipated outcomes rather than hallucinations.

In addition, Apple’s AI adeptly navigates the line between providing guidance to the end user and serving as a source of independent creation, the latter of which may not necessarily be appreciated by creators, a significant demographic for Apple products. Apple Intelligence can assist you in condensing your writing or summarizing an email.

A suggested reply may also be beneficial if you wish to respond to an email promptly. If you want to generate an entire bedtime story from scratch, Apple will allow you to request assistance from ChatGPT.

Apple Intelligence is Boring but Reliable

The company adheres to a comparable methodology for image production. While conversing with a friend via text, Apple Intelligence can generate images. However, the functionality is contingent upon its comprehension of the individuals and topics of the conversation.

It is possible that the feature will not prompt you to generate an AI image if the conversation is about explicit or inappropriate subjects.

The same applies to adding images in other applications, such as Freeform, Pages, and Keynote. You are restricted to specific designs and are guided to suggestions in Image Playground, a new, standalone AI image-generation app. In other words, creating photorealistic deepfakes is impossible using Apple’s application.

Siri can transfer you to ChatGPT (with your authorization) if you wish to inquire about a topic for which it does not possess an answer. This will enable you to investigate the broader realm of chatbots and the numerous responses they offer, should you so desire. However, the error is attributable to ChatGPT, not Apple, when it inevitably fails.

Indeed, a significant portion of Apple’s services and products are not designed to facilitate communication with an AI. Instead, it is a method of utilizing AI for specific applications in which a single click can alter text, or the AI inherently anticipates what the user needs to see—for example, an urgent notification of a text from your mother rather than a coupon from DoorDash.

AI is frequently used in the background or on the side; it is not the primary user interface for completing tasks.

Apple Intelligence is Boring but Reliable

Apple Intelligence achieves success in this regard. It appears to be an additional layer to your current applications, where it resolves common issues (or perhaps allows you to enjoy emojis); it is not attempting to dominate the world, as experts and fugitive OpenAI executives continue to caution us that AI will eventually do.

In the absence of a few features, such as Genmoji, which is merely ridiculous, Apple Intelligence appears mundane and practical. That is why it may operate effectively.

This autumn, Apple Intelligence will be introduced in beta.
