The fact that Apple has thought about making a TV isn’t exactly a secret
In a famous interview with Walter Isaacson, co-founder Steve Jobs said he had “finally cracked it” before he died in 2011. However, there has been no full-fledged Apple TV (instead of the Apple TV set-top box) since then.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that Apple even made full-size versions with a big screen that could be used as a Mac or iPad touchscreen. However, Apple finally stopped the project after looking at the TV market and deciding not to compete in a low-margin field where people only buy a few new products. Plus, the costs should be lowered.
Reports say the company thought about the TV idea again in 2019 when considering moving forward with Apple TV. However, it chose to bring its app and streaming service to TVs made by other companies instead.
Now that the company is making a bunch of smart home devices, like a tablet that can be mounted on the wall, Gurman says that a real Apple TV is once again being talked about. However, leaders may avoid repeating it because of the same market and cost issues.
