At its annual developer conference (WWDC 2024) on Monday, Apple is anticipated to unveil a redesigned Siri voice assistant and a possible partnership with ChatGPT owner OpenAI

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) is more significant than previous events. The iPhone manufacturer is attempting to reassure investors that it has not lost the A.I. battle to Microsoft even though it may have forfeited a few rounds.

According to analysts, Apple will be required to demonstrate to the vast majority of its over 1 billion users, the majority of whom are not tech enthusiasts, why they would desire the new strain of A.I. that has swept Silicon Valley.

Ryan Reith, an analyst at market research firm IDC, stated, “Apple will present a spectacle.” “If they nail the landing, the potential is to get the consumer interested in A.I. because it has been mostly about enterprise.”

For years, Apple has been utilizing A.I. to power features on its devices, including the capacity of its watches to detect collisions and falls.

However, it has been hesitant to emphasize the extent to which this technology enhances the functionality of its devices, as Microsoft has done with the assistance of its early investment in OpenAI.

Apple’s shares have underperformed those of other Big Tech companies this year, and Microsoft surpassed Apple as the world’s largest company by market capitalization in January.

Nvidia, the world’s second-most valuable company, momentarily surpassed Apple last week, indicating a potential shift in power in the technology sector for confident investors.

“Apple’s initial hesitation regarding artificial intelligence was entirely consistent with its brand.”

Dipanjan Chatterjee, a Forrester analyst, has long been noted for his fascination with the benefits of the company’s offerings to its consumers rather than how they were implemented.

“But then the A.I. silence got deafening. All that will change on June 10,” according to him.

Each year, Apple conducts a developer conference at its Cupertino, California, headquarters to exhibit updates to its applications and operating systems and introduce developers to new tools they can incorporate into their applications.

MAKEOVER FOR SIRI

It is anticipated that Apple will allow Siri to operate numerous applications on behalf of the user. This task has been challenging, as Siri must comprehend the user’s precise intentions and the app’s functionality.

For instance, Siri must comprehend the email the user wishes to delete and how the delete function operates on different platforms, such as Microsoft Outlook and Gmail.

In 2018, Apple attempted to enhance Siri’s intelligence by allowing developers to incorporate tools into their applications that would grant Siri greater autonomy.

However, there needed to be more interest in this initiative.

It is anticipated that Apple will implement generative A.I. to upgrade Siri’s fundamental software. The media has reported that Apple and OpenAI have agreed to incorporate the ChatGPT manufacturer’s technology into the upcoming iPhone operating system, iOS 18.

At a time when Apple is contending with robust competition in China and sluggish growth in the United States, confident investors are optimistic that the A.I. features will increase the sales of new iPhones.

Dan Eye, chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital Group, which owns Apple shares, stated that this should result in a robust hardware refresh cycle for Apple in 2025.

Eye anticipates that Apple will restrict specific A.I. capabilities on older models to encourage consumers to purchase newer devices.

Chips for A.I

Apple introduced a new AI-focused processor in its most recent iPad Pro models earlier this month. Analysts anticipate the company will provide developers with information on leveraging the chip’s capabilities to support the new A.I. computing.

The organization may also commence discussions regarding its cloud computing capabilities in response to reports that Apple was contemplating the utilization of its processors within data centers for the first time.

Apple recently brought on Sumit Gupta, a former IBM and Google executive responsible for developing A.I. data centers at both companies.

Apple can implement sophisticated A.I. capabilities beyond individual devices’ capabilities by employing its own CPUs for cloud services.

This approach eliminates the necessity for costly processors from Nvidia.

This method also protects Apple’s built-in security and privacy features.

The developer conference will continue until Friday.
