Bluesky Won’t Use User Posts for AI Training

Bluesky, a social network that’s getting a lot of new users this week because people are leaving X, says it has “no intention” of training generative AI tools with user content

The news came out at the same time that X (formerly Twitter) started using its new terms of service, which let the site use public posts to teach AI.

Bluesky said in an app post, “Many artists and creators have made Bluesky their home, and we hear their worries about other platforms training on their data.” “We don’t use any of your content to train generative AI, and we don’t plan to start.”

The business also said that AI is used in its “Discover” algorithmic feed and internally to help with content moderation. Bluesky says, “None of these are Gen AI systems trained on user content,” though.

Posting on Elon Musk’s social network X gives the company permission to “analyze text and other information you provide and to provide otherwise, promote, and improve the Services, including, for example, for use with and training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models, whether generative or another type.” That’s what the company says on X.

Bluesky has more users now that the U.S. election is over, especially since Musk used the platform to promote Donald Trump, who won the election. This is because X is becoming more right-wing.

Over a million people have signed up for the app in the last 24 hours; the startup said Thursday night. As of this writing, 17.14 million people are using it.

Even though the number of users has grown, Meta’s Threads is still the biggest X competitor. It has over 275 million daily active users and 15 million new signups this month.
