Brazil Rejects Trump's BRICS Tariff Threat, Promotes Single Currency Vision

Brazilian officials dismissed Trump’s proposed 100% BRICS tariff threat on BRICS countries as rhetoric, citing past unfulfilled threats. They emphasized global economic realities and reiterated support for a BRICS common currency to reduce dollar dependence.

Brazil Reactions on Trump’s BRICS Tariff Threat

Officials from Brazil dismissed the proposed 100% tariffs on BRICS countries by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as improbable, referring to them as rhetoric rather than actionable policies.

The Brazilian foreign ministry cited Trump’s previous unfulfilled tariff threats against China, Mexico, and Canada during his first term. The remarks were characterized as provocative by officials under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who expressed doubts regarding their feasibility.

Diplomats recommended that the president-elect take into account the global economic landscape, citing his cautionary remarks regarding the repercussions of countries that decrease their dependence on the U.S. dollar in trade.

Brazil has been a proponent of a BRICS common currency in order to reduce its reliance on the dollar and facilitate trade.
