ChatGPT’s Five-Hour Outage Triggers Global Frenzy

ChatGPT's Five-Hour Outage Triggers Global Frenzy

ChatGPT recovers from a five-hour global outage, easing panic among workers reliant on OpenAI’s AI chatbot for daily tasks.

A prolonged network outage for the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot has prompted ChatGPT users to issue an alarm. The downtime provides a view into the future without AI tools in the face of increasing dependence and adoption levels as OpenAI strives for a rapid resolution.

Massive downtime has been experienced by ChatGPT, causing users to feel anxious

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is currently experiencing a five-hour outage that has resulted in users being left in a state of uncertainty. This issue has affected both mobile applications and web versions. The outage monitoring site Down Detector initially reported the service disruption, which affected multiple regions.

Several users are experiencing an error message, while others stare at blank displays as ChatGPT fails to load. The outage reportedly affects both paid and free users, with OpenAI’s text-to-video model Sora experiencing delays.

OpenAI has verified the technical issue, stating that it has identified the cause and is resolving the malfunction. There are reports that the downtime is associated with internal errors, such as software flaws, or benign issues, such as a traffic overload, although specifics are still lacking. Conversely, the outage may have been precipitated by a cyberattack, which is concerning.

“We have determined the underlying cause of the issue that is resulting in increased latency and errors across the services listed,” stated OpenAI. “We are currently in the process of implementing a mitigation.”

This is not the first time ChatGPT has experienced an outage; in January, the company and its customers were affected by a downtime.

A Deluge of Issues for OpenAI

As a result of the network disruption, users have begun to migrate to OpenAI competitors such as Grok, Gemini, and Claude. Users increasingly rely on alternative video generators to complete their daily duties as Sora remains unavailable.

According to a system status report from OpenAI, the API platform was affected by 14 components, while ChatGPT was affected by 21. Nevertheless, the technical malfunction has impacted four of the components of Sora.

OpenAI is currently addressing the outage, but it is also being threatened with legal action by Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO is reportedly interested in filing a lawsuit against OpenAI for deviating from its non-profit ethos in favor of a commercial model. OpenAI shattered the record for the fastest product to reach 100 million users in a mere three months, and it subsequently attracted over 6 million subscribers to its paid variants.

ChatGPT is currently unavailable; however, DappRadar data indicates that AI DApps experienced a 23% increase in May, which is contributing to the ecosystem’s re-emergence. Bitcoin and Ethereum are currently leading the charge in the broader cryptocurrency market, while altcoins anticipate an impact.
