Coinbase now lets users use USDC stablecoin as collateral in U.S. futures markets, expanding use cases and pairing with broader stablecoin regulation initiatives
Coinbase has agreed to utilize USDC, the second-largest stablecoin in the world, as collateral in US futures trading. According to a Bloomberg report, the cryptocurrency exchange is also broadening its payment options, which include the integration of USDC on e-commerce merchant sites.
In a Wednesday announcement, Coinbase Derivatives stated that this is anticipated to be the first regulated use case of USDC as collateral, and it will utilize Coinbase Custody Trust as the custodian.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) must grant its approval for the integration. The USDC collateral plan that was recently announced is not the first partnership between Coinbase and Nodal Clear. In May of the previous year,
Nodal Clear initiated support for trading specific cryptocurrency futures contracts on the Coinbase Derivatives Exchange (CDE) in May. Bitcoin Futures (BTI), Ether Futures (ETI), nano Bitcoin Futures (BIT), and nano Ether Futures (ET) comprise this category.

As reported earlier this week, Coinbase obtained approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to offer blockchain-based stocks. Implementing blockchain technology would enable Coinbase to provide equity trading services effectively.
