Coinbase Sponsors WNBA Cup

Coinbase hosted a relatively sober evening for female sports enthusiasts

The Minnesota Lynx emerged victorious over the New York Liberty at the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Commissioner’s Cup Championship on June 25, and women’s sports bars throughout the United States were brimming with enthusiastic supporters. Coinbase, which also sponsored the event, provided the entertainment.

Introducing a novel approach to sponsorships, Coinbase
The Sports Bra in Portland, Oregon, was at full capacity, with 56 patrons treated to bar cuisine and one complimentary glass of beer or wine. However, there were no complimentary cocktails, not even for Cointelegraph. Upon responding to invitations from the WNBA or Coinbase, patrons were also awarded a complimentary T-shirt. Comparable incidents transpired in Seattle, St. Paul, and New York City pubs.

Coinbase has supported the NBA and WNBA for three years as part of a multiyear agreement. The timing was favorable. “The WNBA has experienced substantial growth.” “That is the first time in the past few years that stadiums have been sold out,” Sports Bra operations manager Katie Leedy informed Cointelegraph.

Leedy stated that Coinbase contacted Jenny Nguyen, the proprietor of Sports Bra, to propose the watch party. The bar’s management then collaborated directly with the crypto exchange to organize the event. Kate Rouch, the chief marketing officer of Coinbase, disclosed to Cointelegraph:

“Encouraging women to participate in an updated, more empowering financial system is one reason we choose to partner with the WNBA. […] We’re proud to support female athletes, women-owned small businesses, and to celebrate in person with dedicated WNBA fans.”

The Sports Bra, which debuted in February 2022 and boasted to be the world’s first women-only sports bar, is experiencing significant growth in tandem with the growth of women’s sports. According to reports, Nguyen generated $1 million in revenue during its initial eight months of operation, following its establishment through a Kickstarter campaign.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s 776 Foundation has invested in the bar, which intends to expand nationwide through franchising.
