He wants to do this to counter what he sees as a growing threat from foreign governments. Half the money will be used to teach people about “cyber hygiene,” which means keeping power lines and other infrastructure safe from cyberattacks.

Since he started giving to charity in 2015, Newmark, 71, has given or promised to give more than $400 million. Cybersecurity has always been at the top of his list of causes. (He told Fortune last year that bad people are now a threat to America, and everyone needs to work together.)

Newmark is also interested in a free and independent press and, to a smaller extent, pigeon rescue. He told the Journal that his giving is based on the Jewish idea of tikkun olam, which means “repairing the world,” which he learned from his Sunday school teachers. He told Fortune alone that he plans to give away all his money while still alive.
