Crypto Hacks Total $2.1 Billion In 2025; Seed Phrases

Crypto hacks in H1 2025 hit $2.1B across 75 attacks, per TRM Labs, putting the year on track to break records for crypto-related theft.

2025 is expected to see record-breaking crypto hacks, with $2.1 billion taken in just six months.

A recent analysis from the blockchain intelligence company TRM Labs claims that hackers target front-ends and seed words.

In 2025 H1, Crypto Hacks Cost $2.1 Billion

According to the TRM Labs data, the number of cryptocurrency thefts has increased by 50% in the past year.

A staggering $2.1 billion has been lost in the year’s first half due to 75 occurrences. This amount nearly outweighs all 2024 losses from Bitcoin theft.

Notably, infrastructure assaults accounted for the majority of losses, compromising the technical underpinnings of cryptosystems through front-end hijacking, seed phrase breaches, and private key theft.

On average, this yields ten times more than other assault methods and accounts for over 80% of stolen assets. It said,

Infrastructure attacks — such as private key and seed phrase thefts, and front-end compromises — accounted for over 80% of stolen funds in H1 2025 and were, on average, ten times larger than other attack types… Often enabled by social engineering or insider access, these breaches expose critical weaknesses at the foundation of cryptosecurity.

Three well-known crypto news sites have experienced security lapses in the last week.

CoinMarketCap and Cointelgraph have had front-end breaches where users were presented with a malicious pop-up, as CoinGape pointed out.

The official X account of the cryptocurrency news source PANews was the subject of the most recent cyberattack.

Hackers accessed the X account on June 27 to disseminate false information regarding an airdrop.

PANews cautioned users not to click on websites linked to these crypto hacks after the occurrence.

Contribution Of North Korea To Rise In Crypto Hacks

The TRM Labs research claims that the $1.4 billion hack of Bybit, a cryptocurrency exchange based in Dubai, in February is the biggest in 2025.

These crypto hacks, which has been linked to North Korean hackers, accounts for around 70% of all losses this year.

The average hack size doubled from $15 million in the first half of 2024 to about $30 million due to this occurrence.

Interestingly, the article blames the North Korean organization for $1.6 billion in stolen money from H1 2025 crypto thefts.

Seventy percent of the losses are attributable to the funds they have amassed.

This astounding sum was primarily caused by the Bybit theft, underscoring the DPRK’s continuous attempts to use cryptocurrency for statecraft, funding nuclear projects, and evading sanctions.

The Nobitex hack is another significant cyberattack that rocked the world of crypto.

The Iranian cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex experienced a significant hack earlier this month, losing over $100 million in cryptocurrency holdings.

According to reports, Gonjeshke Darande, an Israeli hacker, spearheaded the operation.

TRM Labs advises the crypto industry to have strong security measures to counter these threats.

Multi-factor authentication, cold storage for money, frequent security audits, and focused defenses against social engineering and insider threats are all part of this.
