Eigen Labs CEO: Milestone Cuts Scalability Trade-Off

Eigen Labs CEO says Eigenlayer’s upgrade brings Ethereum-grade security and scalability to L2s with new multichain verification support.

By introducing a multichain verification capability that enables decentralized services to operate on layer-2 networks while maintaining Ethereum-grade security, Eigenlayer has significantly advanced in scaling decentralized infrastructure.

In addition to the Ethereum network, Eigenlayer unveiled a protocol innovation on Thursday that enables Actively Validated Services (AVS) to operate on layer 2s.

Eigen Labs CEO introduced the new capability on the Base network’s Sepolia Testnet.

The update was a “critical milestone” in Eigen Labs’ roadmap, according to Eigen Labs CEO and founder Sreeram Kannan, who spoke to Cointelegraph about it.

According to him, the feature is currently only available on Base Sepolia but will soon be expanded to other blockchains.

He said they aim to support more chains and intend to introduce the feature to mainnet environments in the third quarter of 2025.

“Base stood out as our first partner because of its vibrant builder ecosystem and alignment with our mission to accelerate the app layer,” he said.

Eigen Labs CEO Explains Multichain Idea For Decentralized Services

EigenCloud can scale verified infrastructure globally thanks to this functionality, Kannan informed Cointelegraph.

According to him, this means that AVS must interact with developers on the Ethereum mainnet and other networks.

“Up until now, AVS was forced to decide between scaling to faster, less expensive environments or utilizing Ethereum’s security,” Kannan stated.

“Multichain Verification eliminates the need for them to choose.”

Thanks to the technology, EigenLayer’s pooled security is passed down to AVSs deployed on other blockchains.

All supported chains automatically sync validator data, including stake weights, operator configurations, and slashing penalties.

Stake weights indicate how much cryptocurrency a validator has staked, whereas slashing refers to punishing validators who perform poorly or deliberately.

Blockchain Networks Encourage Improvements To Infrastructure

The latest Eigenlayer improvement coincides with networks’ efforts to improve their technical capabilities.

A technical update released on Thursday by hybrid blockchain Build on Bitcoin moved it closer to receiving a completely decentralized mark on the L2Beat platform.

The network used an optimistic rollup framework to implement zero-knowledge (ZK) fraud proofs.

The Ethereum Foundation, meanwhile, established a one-year deadline for zkEVM’s mainnet implementation.

The foundation set the stage for ZK-proofs to replace conventional block execution on July 10, eventually.
