Toner painted a picture of a manipulative executive who nurtured a “toxic atmosphere” in her first comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman’s dramatic dismissal and rehiring in November of last year.

Toner stated that two OpenAI executives reported to the board instances of “psychological abuse” that contributed to Altman’s dismissal.

“They were severe, to the point where they sent us screenshots and documentation of some of the instances they were telling us about…” she stated.

Altman should have provided an immediate response when asked for a comment.

OpenAI cited a statement by current OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor that was featured on “The Ted AI Show” podcast and stated that an investigation had been carried out into the occurrences of November of last year in response to a request for comment.

“The fact that Miss Toner continues to revisit these issues is disappointing. Concerns regarding product safety or security, the rate of development, OpenAI’s finances, or its statements to investors, customers, or business partners did not influence the prior board’s decision, according to the review.

Altman returned to OpenAI with great success four days following his dismissal, despite facing the threat of resignation from almost 700-strong staff unless the board resigned and reinstated him.

Toner attributed Altman’s prompt reappearance on the podcast to employees being apprised that the organization would perish in his absence. She added that employees dreaded retaliation from Altman if they did not support him once a possible return became probable.
