Google Adds AI to Paris Olympics Broadcast

Google, NBCUniversal, and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced Thursday that they will utilize AI to explain competitions in the U.S. broadcast of the Paris Olympics

According to a joint statement from the three organizations, Google will be designated as the official search AI partner of Team USA, signifying the first time a technology company has collaborated with the sport’s nonprofit.

The announcement is part of NBCUniversal’s efforts to modernize its coverage of the Games in the United States to appeal to audiences who do not watch live television and young viewers who have become accustomed to viewing clips online.

The media company Comcast previously announced that it would introduce personalized AI-generated daily summaries of the competition. AI versions of individuals, including sports commentator Al Michaels, will narrate these recaps.

NBCUniversal’s announcers will utilize Google Search’s AI overviews to address inquiries regarding specific sports, including the significance of pool-lane assignments in swimming competitions during the daytime and primetime coverage of the Olympics.

Google’s AI overviews offer written responses to search queries without the necessity of clicking on a website link.

The companies announced that comedian Leslie Jones, who will serve as a commentator in Paris, will employ Google’s Gemini AI model to learn new sports and entertain viewers.

The Paris Olympics will commence on July 26.
