Judge Allows Artists’ Lawsuit Against Gen AI Makers

A judge has ruled that artists’ lawsuits against generative AI creators can proceed, potentially impacting intellectual property law

A ruling was made on Monday by the court presiding over the case that a class action complaint submitted by artists who claim that Stability, Runway, and DeviantArt improperly trained their artificial intelligence on stolen artwork can move forward, but only in part.

The complaint was brought by artists who allege that the three companies had done so.

In a ruling that was not reacmously, the court rejected some of the charges made by the plaintiffs while allowing others to stand. This indicates that the lawsuit may be brought to trial in certain circumstances.

Regardless of whether or not they are effective, the method will be time-consuming and costly and result in a significant amount of dirty laundry being shown. The folks who are working on building artificial intelligence will find this to be quite disappointing.

They are not the only companies defending themselves against copyright claims; they are not even close to being the only ones taking such action.
