LimeWire Adds Decentralized File Sharing

LimeWire Adds Decentralized File Sharing

LimeWire returns to file sharing with a Web3-driven strategy, introducing a new feature powered by BNB Greenfield.

LimeWire, a peer-to-peer file-sharing website that gained popularity in the early 2000s, has introduced a decentralized file-sharing functionality powered by BNB Greenfield.

The company announced a file-sharing service that enables users to send and receive encrypted files worldwide in a press release that was supplied to Cointelegraph.

The company claims that file sharing has always been central to it’s identity.

The business emphasized that bringing file sharing back into its platform requires fusing its historical features with its modernized ones.

BNB Chain developed the decentralized storage system known as BNB Greenfield.

LimeWire Rejoins Web3 In File Sharing

In the news release, LimeWire’s CEO and co-founder Julian Zehetmayr stated that the company’s identity includes file sharing. He said:

“As a pioneer brand of peer-to-peer networks, file sharing is in LimeWire’s DNA. […] With this launch, we’re returning to our roots, reimagined for the modern era, and combining the power of AI with secure, decentralized file sharing for everyone.”

The company claims that over two million people have already used their artificial intelligence software to create, modify, and share material.

According to the company, there has been a significant demand for its content alteration products. Additionally, one of its users’ most requested features has been file sharing.

LimeWire’s Debut In Cryptocurrency Market

In the early 2000s, the company became well-known as a peer-to-peer, free file-sharing program frequently used to obtain pirated music. By 2007, it was installed on one out of every three PCs worldwide.

However, the company was essentially shut down and software distribution was stopped after a federal court judge granted an injunction against it in October 2010.

In 2022, the company was resurrected as a marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) following the acquisition of its rights by Paul and Julian Zehetmayr. The platform is a “platform for artists, not against them,” according to the new proprietors.

The platform launched a game that pays gamers with cryptocurrency in 2023, further venturing into the Web3 realm.

A game that mimics the music-pirating days of LimeWire’s previous application was released on April 13, 2023.

A LimeWire ERC-20 token airdrop was available to top players.
