Meta Develops Gesture-Control Wristband for Computers

Meta researchers are creating a device that enables individuals to operate a computer through hand gestures.

This encompasses the ability to move a cursor, access applications, and send messages by writing in the air like a pencil.

According to a research paper published in the journal Nature, Meta’s wristband utilizes a technique known as surface electromyography (sEMG), which interprets user movements by detecting electrical signals generated by muscle activity. These signals can detect an individual’s intended actions before their execution.

This wristband aims to offer individuals with motor disabilities less intrusive instruments for interacting with computers.

The company is partnering with Carnegie Mellon to evaluate the wristbands of individuals with spinal cord injuries. This technology will allow them to operate computers independently of their ability to use their hands or arms completely.

Douglas Weber, a Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Neuroscience Institute professor, observed that individuals with complete hand paralysis still demonstrate some muscle activity. Consequently, the device can interpret the user’s intentional actions.

The wristband is a more straightforward alternative to other projects, such as Neuralink, a project by Elon Musk that seeks to implant brain chips in individuals with severe paralysis.

Other non-invasive methods include headgear that generates electroencephalogram (EEG) signals; however, these have constraints due to their inadequate signals.

Meanwhile, Meta’s wristband could be utilized immediately without the need for surgical intervention, and its utilization of sEMG signals results in a greater frequency than that of EEG.
