Meta lifted its special restrictions on Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts ahead of the 2024 US presidential elections.
Meta announced in an amended blog post on Friday that the suspension penalties for former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts will no longer be intensified. The company asserts that it decided to guarantee that all Presidential nominees were on equal footing concerning their platform before the 2024 Presidential election.
In January 2023, Meta imposed more stringent penalties on Trump than other users when it reinstated his social media profiles. The former President could have been banished for a maximum of two years for violating Meta’s community standards under the heightened penalties. The organization asserts that Trump will be subject to the same penalties as any other Instagram or Facebook user.
Regular users will receive a warning for violating Facebook’s Community Standards. Users may be prohibited from accessing particular publishing features for a specified period following two offenses. Users are prohibited from posting for an entire day after seven violations, and a month-long suspension is imposed after ten strikes.
According to Meta in a blog post, “We think that the American people should have the opportunity to hear from the nominees for President on an equal basis when evaluating our responsibility to allow political expression.”
In 2021, Meta initially prohibited Trump from using Facebook, his preferred method of online communication with his supporters, following the January 6 insurrection. At the time, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that “the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great” before indefinitely banning Trump. Today, Trump maintains an active presence on his personal social media platform, Truth Social, in addition to his 34 million Facebook followers.
The company is reducing the former President’s severe penalties before the 2024 Republican National Convention. Nevertheless, Meta asserts that these exaggerated suspension sanctions were implemented in response to extraordinary circumstances and were never implemented against Trump.
Donald Trump issued a menacing statement against Mark Zuckerberg on Truth Social earlier this week. The former President threatened to imprison “election fraudsters” and referred to the CEO of Meta by his most recent moniker, “Zuckerbucks.” Trump cautioned Zuckerberg to exercise caution.
