Meta Platforms suspended generative AI tools in Brazil on Wednesday in reaction to the government’s concerns to its new privacy policy for personal data and AI
Brazil is a critical market for Meta, with a population exceeding 200 million. For instance, Brazil is the second-largest user base for Meta’s WhatsApp, following India.
Meta held an event in Sao Paulo in June to introduce its inaugural AI-powered ad targeting program for businesses on the popular messaging service.
Meta’s new privacy policy for using personal data to train generative artificial intelligence systems in the country was suspended immediately by Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) earlier this month.
The Brazilian authority, ANPD, determined that the company would be required to modify its privacy policy to exclude the section concerning the processing of personal data for generative AI training.
Meta announced in a statement that it has elected to suspend the tools while it engages in discussions with the ANPD to resolve the authority’s reservations regarding generative artificial intelligence.
