Musk: Tesla Doesn’t Need xAI Licenses

Elon Musk denied that Tesla has considered splitting income with xAI to use the startup’s AI algorithms

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Tesla would incorporate xAI models into its driver-assistance software, which is referred to as Full Self-Driving or FSD, as part of a proposed agreement that was conveyed to investors.

Additionally, Tesla’s AI venture would contribute to developing software for its humanoid robot Optimus and a voice assistant for its vehicles.

Musk stated on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he had not read the WSJ story. However, he characterized a post summarizing the report as “inaccurate.”

He wrote, “Tesla has gained a wealth of knowledge from discussions with engineers at xAI that have facilitated the attainment of unsupervised FSD.

However, there is no requirement to license any content from xAI.” “The xAI models are enormous, containing most human knowledge in compressed form.

They cannot be run on the Tesla vehicle inference computer; we would not wish for them to be.

Musk established xAI as a rival to OpenAI, which he co-founded but ultimately withdrew from.

As reported by TechCrunch earlier this year, xAI presented a vision for its $6 billion funding round in which its models would be trained on data from Musk’s various companies (Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, and X).

The models would subsequently enhance the technology of those companies.

Tesla shareholders have filed a lawsuit against Musk for the decision to establish xAI, contending that Musk has transferred talent and resources from Tesla to a company that is essentially a competitor.
