Nearly Half of AI Data Centers may Lack Power by 2027

Nearly half of AI data centers worldwide could face power shortages by 2027, impacting infrastructure and growth in artificial intelligence

In the coming years, it is anticipated that artificial intelligence will have an insatiable thirst for electricity, which may result in power shortages for data centers of various kinds. According to a new estimate from Gartner, the amount of electricity that was required by new servers in the previous year was 195 terawatt-hours.

As much as 18 million families use in a single year, that is the amount. On the other hand, by the year 2027, new servers might command 500 terawatt-hours, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 46 million families.

In addition to the power that is utilized by current data centers, which, according to an estimate provided by Goldman Sachs, already consumed 349 terawatt hours in 2022, this amount is far higher.

In the absence of additional carbon-free power sources, the pollution caused by the training and use of artificial intelligence could soar. The vast wager that Sam Altman placed on fusion power, which was worth more than $375 million, is beginning to make more sense.
