Nvidia Plans Powerful AI Chip for China

Nvidia Plans Powerful AI Chip for China

The world’s most valuable chipmaker is far from abandoning its ambition to retain China as a key growth market.

Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported that Nvidia is reportedly developing a new AI chip for sale in China that is half the power of its flagship B300 Blackwell GPU.

The B30A chip, which is currently permitted for sale in China, is expected to be more potent than the H20 GPUs, according to the report. However, unlike the dual-die design in the more potent B300 GPUs, it will be single-die.

NVLink support, high-bandwidth memory, and fast data transmission are all features the B30A would share with the H20.

According to Reuters, the B30A development is distinct from another chip the company should develop for sale in the country.

“We assess a diverse array of products for our roadmap to ensure that we are adequately equipped to compete within the constraints of government regulations.”

In an emailed statement, Nvidia stated, “The relevant authorities have approved all of the products we provide and are exclusively intended for commercial purposes.”

The news is timely, as the Trump administration has recently eased its stance on allowing chipmakers to export high-performance AI chips to China. However, Reuters cited its sources as indicating that approvals for this new chip are not guaranteed.

Critics contend that the United States must preserve its position as a leader in artificial intelligence by managing the flow of essential technology to China, as the competition to develop AI has a pronounced impact on the geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.

However, Nvidia and its peers, currently selling the equivalent of shovels during a gold rush, maintain that ceding the valuable Chinese market to competitors such as Huawei would be equivalent to giving up entirely.
