‘Off The Grid’ Introduces New Users to Blockchain Gaming

Even while still in the early access stage, “Off The Grid” is already pulling in new mainstream users to the world of Blockchain gaming.

At present, “Off The Grid” by Gunzilla Games is the most popular free-to-play third-person battle royale game on the Epic Games online store.

The game is still classified as an early-access title; however, it has garnered substantial attention on the Twitch streaming platform. On October 11, 154,440 viewers watched gamers stream the new release.

Inactive The Grid’s blockchain features are constructed on an Avalanche subnet known as GUNZ. This custom-tailored blockchain ecosystem enables players to mint NFTs representing in-game items such as skins and weapons.

By minting these items as NFTs or other onchain assets, players can maintain control over their in-game items and facilitate the emergence of secondary markets for in-game assets.

A sustainable approach to blockchain gaming?

Inactive The Grid is a AAA title, the video game equivalent of a blockbuster film. It is a departure from clicker games or other Web 3 experiences that are essentially token models first and video games second.

These blockchain games have been criticized by industry professionals and users, who contend that these models are not sustainable.

Critics contend that most blockchain games employ incentives to entice users, who abandon the games after receiving the initial payout, thereby eroding their long-term sustainability. The clicker model is frequently criticized because user counts tend to decrease after the initial significant airdrop.

Numerous industry executives think that the solution is to develop engaging and robust gameplay experiences that appeal to mainstream gamers. Token models or blockchain mechanisms provide utility for in-game assets rather than being the primary focus.

According to a recent survey by Elympics, the Blockchain Game Alliance, and PlayToEarn, more than 10% of respondents worldwide have never attempted blockchain games, citing the complexity of connecting crypto wallets as a significant obstacle to user onboarding. The survey reached over 1,000 individuals worldwide.
