The Verge reported on Thursday that OpenAI plans to release its next cutting-edge AI model by December of this year
The model is internally called Orion. Reports say that, unlike earlier releases, the company plans to slowly send the model to trusted partners before making it available to more people through ChatGPT.
A representative for OpenAI told TechCrunch that the story is not true, but they would not say anything else.
According to The Verge, Microsoft workers should be able to get to Orion as early as November. However, it’s unclear what OpenAI will name the model. Inside OpenAI, the o1 set of models was known as “strawberry” for months before it came out.
A lot is riding on OpenAI’s next version of its frontier model. The AI company just raised $6.6 billion at a value of $157 billion. Investors expect OpenAI to keep putting out smarter and smarter models, which will lead the tech world.
