OpenAI To Ship 100M Pocket AI Devices

OpenAI To Ship 100M Pocket AI Devices

OpenAI plans AI companion devices for daily use, says Sam Altman, though details on their design and function remain undisclosed.

OpenAI intends to create AI “companion” devices that will include artificial intelligence functionalities in daily living, perhaps paving the way for a novel technological advancement to be utilized alongside laptops and smartphones.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that he and designer Jony Ive are creating these confidential devices for widespread distribution, intending to release 100 million units at launch.

Ives became part of OpenAI following the acquisition of his business, io, by Altman’s company in a $6.5 billion transaction, as reported by the Journal on May 21.

Neither Altman nor Ives delineated the appearance or functionality of these companion gadgets.

Ives described them as a “new design movement” akin to Apple’s ecosystem of hardware and software interactions.

OpenAI has secured billions of dollars from investors, who regard the business as a leader in the AI sector after the remarkable success of its ChatGPT large language model (LLM).

As of May, industry figures indicated that ChatGPT had around 800 million weekly active users.

The usage trends contributed to OpenAI’s substantial valuation of $157 billion as of October 2024, nearly doubling to $300 billion by March 2025.

Another “Secret” Project, Not First

OpenAI’s aspirations encompass social media, aiming to compete with Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta platforms, as reported by The Verge on April 15.

The forthcoming social media platform is expected to integrate ChatGPT’s image-generating features with a social media feed like that of X.

The status of the new social media platform’s introduction as an independent product or its integration into ChatGPT remains ambiguous.

The integration of AI and social media has extended into the blockchain sector, with numerous businesses employing these technologies to develop AI agents, LLM tools, and decentralized social media platforms.

According to Cointelegraph, Validation Cloud has just implemented a large language model on the Hedera network, enabling decentralized finance users to access blockchain data easily.
