Orange Warns of Service Disruption After Cyberattack

Orange reports a cyberattack detected on July 25, warning of service disruption as containment efforts continue.

On Monday, Orange, a French telecommunications company and one of the world’s largest phone providers, disclosed that it had been the victim of an unspecified cyberattack.

The company disclosed that it identified a cyberattack “on one of its information systems” on July 25 and subsequently “isolated potentially affected services and minimized any impact.”

Orange’s decision to isolate affected systems resulted in disruptions to specific platforms, business customers, and public sector services, primarily in France, according to a translation of the statement.

The company’s announcement stated that its implementing solutions will progressively restore services by Wednesday, and that “there is no evidence to suggest that any internal or customer data has been exfiltrated.”

Orange did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment, which encompassed inquiries regarding the nature of the intrusion and the company’s ability to identify any data exfiltration.

In the announcement, the company stated that it is in the process of engaging and informing affected customers, and that it has lodged a complaint with “relevant authorities.” They did not provide any specifics.

Companies in Europe subject to GDPR, the bloc’s data protection regulations, must notify their local data protection authorities within three days of a suspected data violation.
