Procreate announces its decision to avoid incorporating generative AI into its products

A well-known iPad design application, Procreate, has declared its opposition to generative AI and has committed to never incorporating generative AI features into its products.

The company stated on its website that the present trajectory of generative AI is inappropriate for its platform, despite the fact that machine learning is a “compelling technology with a lot of merit.”

Procreate asserts that it is not pursuing a technology that threatens human creativity despite the potential for the company to appear to be at risk of being left behind.

In a video posted to X on Monday, Procreate CEO James Cuda issued an even more vehement statement against the technology.

Cuda expressed his disdain for generative AI in the video by stating, “I f*ing hate it.” “I am dissatisfied with the current state of the industry and the impact it is having on artists.”

We will not be incorporating any generative AI into our products. Our products are consistently developed and designed with the assumption that a human will be involved in the creation process.

The company’s stance has garnered widespread praise from digital artists online, many of whom are dissatisfied with the manner in which other digital art and illustration applications have introduced the technology.

For example, in 2022, Clip Studio Paint, an illustration application, retracted its intention to introduce an image generator utility in response to user dissatisfaction.

Adobe, which is widely considered to possess the most popular suite of design tools, has integrated numerous generative AI features into its products.

Furthermore, Adobe was recently the subject of criticism after its revised terms of service appeared to suggest that it would train AI models on users’ content. Subsequently, the organisation was obliged to specify that it does not train AI models on its clients’ content.

In an era in which digital art platforms are rapidly adopting AI, it is intriguing to observe a widely used application defy the trend.

Procreate’s announcement has garnered substantial acclaim from artists and designers; therefore, it will be intriguing to observe whether other organisations emulate it.

“We are uncertain about the conclusion of this narrative.” However, we are confident that we are on the correct course by promoting human creativity,” Cuda stated.
