Russia's Rosseti Eyes Crypto Mining to Utilize Power Surplus

Rosseti, Russia’s largest power grid operator, plans to utilize underutilized power centers for crypto mining, aiming to boost revenue and economic growth.

Rosseti, the biggest power grid operator in Russia, is looking into cryptocurrency mining. They want to use the extra power from their facilities and find new ways to increase their income, as reported by the state news service TASS.

“The Rosseti Group is the largest grid company in Russia and can act as an operator for coordinating the placement of mining infrastructure,” the company told TASS.

The state-owned company sees crypto mining as a way to make better use of extra capacity at power plants that aren’t running at full strength. This could increase income from tariffs, tax payments, and help the economy grow.

Rosseti Emphasis on Crypto Mining

Rosseti emphasized that it is ready for mining operations, with infrastructure set up to handle the power needs of mining and data systems that guarantee a stable power supply for the area.

Rosseti is thinking about creating a special pricing plan for miners to better control power usage. Talks are currently happening to decide how the company will set up mining infrastructure.

This move is part of Russia’s larger goal to control cryptocurrency mining. In August, President Vladimir Putin signed a law that states only listed companies and business owners can do large-scale mining activities. Crypto mining has been banned in some areas from January 1, 2025, to March 15, 2031, because of power outages.
