Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Price Amid Tariffs

Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Price Amid Tariffs

Sony is raising PlayStation 5 prices in response to new tariffs, impacting gamers as costs rise across key markets.

On Wednesday, Sony disclosed that it would increase the cost of PlayStation 5 consoles. These modifications will take effect on Thursday, August 21.

Sony is increasing console prices by approximately $50, citing “a challenging economic environment” that refers to President Trump’s tariffs on imported products.

The PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro will increase to $549.99, $499.99, and $749.99, respectively, in the United States. On July 31, the White House announced a 15% tariff on Japan.

The organization stated that it does not intend to increase the cost of accessories or alter prices in other countries.

Nevertheless, Sony had already increased the prices of PlayStation consoles in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in April, citing the same challenging environment.

Sony had previously increased console prices in 2022 in certain regions in response to inflation; however, the United States markets were unaffected then.

In response to the news of Trump’s tariffs, some of Sony’s competitors have also implemented price adjustments for their gaming products.

In May, Microsoft announced that it would raise the price of consoles by $80 to $100, increasing the prices of specific titles, controllers, and accessories.
