Since Threads came out a year ago, users have asked for the ability to make their “Following” feed the main feed they see
But now, after more than a year, Threads is finally trying the feature so that users can do it.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said on Monday that the social network is now testing a feature that will let users set their usual feed to either “For You,” “Following,” or a custom one.
A few days before the launch, Threads added custom feeds, which let users put together feeds around certain themes or user profiles. The tool makes Threads more like Bluesky, which is a decentralized social network where users can make their own feeds, algorithms, and groups.
Meta has been working quickly to update Threads while a lot of X users switch to Bluesky, which now has more than 20 million users. The most recent changes to the app show that Meta is trying to keep users from switching to Bluesky by listening to their complaints and giving them what they want.
Last week, the platform underwent changes that increased the amount of content from people you follow in the “For You” feed. Some people were pleased about the change, but others were upset when they saw Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri‘s post about it. They expressed their desire to have their following feed become their default feed.
After a few days, users can now choose to do that. Zuckerberg wrote in his post that he was “interested to see how and if people use this.”
Some users are receiving the new function, according to an email from Meta to TechCrunch.
Threads has a strong user base—more than 275 million daily active users—but Bluesky is making it harder for Threads to stay ahead. Similarweb, a market research company, says that Bluesky is catching up to Threads in terms of daily active users. If the social network can keep growing at the rate it is now, it might finally catch up to Threads.
