Threads Users Can See Followers from Other Servers

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that users linked to the fediverse can now see followers and likes from sites like Mastodon and Pixelfed

The company said users will now have up to 15 minutes to change and fix their posts on the social network.

If you click on a post’s action or follower list, you can see a full list of servers that follow and like it. To see the lists, you’ll need to click on “fediverse followers” or “fediverse likes.”

The news comes when Threads has slowly strengthened its ties with the fediverse over the past few months. In March, users could first connect their accounts to the fediverse.

For example, a few weeks ago, the company started letting users see comments on other people’s posts, which added more content to Threads. Note that users have been able to see responses to their posts on the fediverse since June. Thread users can’t reply to replies from other servers yet, but the company that owns Meta has said that this function is being worked on.

ActivityPub is the decentralized social networking protocol that links the fediverse. Meta says that Threads has almost 200 million users, making it the biggest social network to use it. More than 12 million people use the fediverse as a whole.

Users will have more time to change or edit posts now that the time limit on changing posts has been raised. Before, users only had five minutes to do so.

For those who have linked their account to the fediverse, Mosseri said that their Threads posts will be shared on the fediverse 15 minutes after the edit window closes.

Users on Threads have been able to edit posts for a year now, and unlike on X (formerly Twitter), they don’t have to pay extra to use the tool. However, users on X have a lot more time to change posts—they can do so up to an hour after sharing them.
