The action appears to be a reaction to the complaints TikTok has received regarding the negative effects these filters can have on younger users; it is more about beauty filters that alter a person’s appearance than it is about adorable bunny ears.
Bytedance, a $300 billion digital company, owns TikTok, where anyone above the age of 13 can register as a user. People who fall into the 13–18 age range might have various default settings. Regulators have questioned the effectiveness of the company’s different methods for enforcing these age limitations.
TikTok says it will roll out these changes “in the coming weeks” across its global network.
