Toyota to Build EV Battery Plant for Lexus

The Nikkei Business newspaper reported that Toyota Motor plans to develop an electric vehicle battery plant in Fukuoka and provide batteries to a Lexus manufacturer

The newspaper stated that the world’s most successful automaker would endeavor to establish Fukuoka as a central hub of its battery-powered vehicle supply chain and an export base for Asia on the island of Kyushu.

According to a Toyota spokesperson, the organization was aware of the allegation; however, it had not been disclosed.

The spokesperson stated that Toyota has implemented various initiatives to enhance its capacity to produce electric vehicle batteries.

Toyota’s subsidiary, Toyota Motor Kyushu, manufactures Lexus vehicles at the Miyata facility.

The automaker has previously stated that it will introduce electric vehicles (EVs) that utilize next-generation batteries globally beginning in 2026. Its EV-focused unit, BEV Factory, will manufacture these vehicles.

The BEV Factory unit produces just under half of the 3.5 million EVs the corporation aims to sell annually by 2030. In 2023, it distributed 104,000 electric vehicles.

According to Nikkei, Toyota still needs to determine the budget for the battery facility and the date on which construction will commence. The publication did not specify the source of the information.
