The FTC is investigating whether Uber violated consumer protection rules by allegedly forcing users into its Uber One subscription and complicating cancellations
The FTC launched the inquiry in response to consumer complaints earlier this year. Customers can cancel in 20 seconds or less, according to Uber, which told Bloomberg that their cancellation procedure “follows both the letter and the spirit of the law.”
Recently, the Federal Trade Commission has been pressuring subscription service providers to make cancellations simpler. The commission finalized a “click-to-cancel” rule in October that may affect everything from gym memberships to streaming services. However, there are already legal challenges to the rule.
The FTC allegedly attempted to persuade Uber to accept a settlement in the days following Donald Trump’s election victory, which Uber’s attorneys reportedly described as including an “enormous monetary amount.”
