US Judge Orders Google to Open Google Play to Rivals

There are more app stores for Android users now that a federal judge has told Google to let competitors into its app shop

On Monday, Judge James Donato made the final decision in the Epic vs. Google case. In it, he explained how Google needs to change how it runs Google Play.

The filing says that starting November 1, Google cannot pay developers only to put their apps on Google Play for three years. Google Play can’t force developers to use its billing system either, and developers must be able to let users know about other ways to pay.

Google must also let other Android app shops access the apps in the Google Play Store and use third-party apps in its app store.

Google responded to the decision by saying it would file an appeal and ask the courts to stop the ordered changes. It said the changes would “undermine Android’s ability to compete with Apple’s iOS.”
