Buterin responded to a post regarding the potential for the celebrity crypto trend to shift towards sustainable value creation through the use of Memecoins like Iggy Azalea’s mother Iggy token
Vitalik Buterin is dissatisfied with the recent increase in celebrity memecoin releases. Ethereum’s co-founder thinks that a project’s objective should be to ensure that the average participant feels content and content with their involvement, even if the tokens ultimately lose their value.
Buterin stated in a June 5 X post that financialization is only justifiable if it serves a purpose that adds value to society, such as enhancing healthcare, fostering open-source software, and fostering art and creativity.
His statement was in response to a post regarding the potential for Iggy Azalea’s Mother Iggy Token to become the mother of this cycle’s celebrity experimentation if it reaches sustainable value creation.
Celebrity tokens are digital assets or cryptocurrencies developed and promoted by personalities. They frequently integrate with the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem, leveraging the celebrity’s popularity to generate interest and investment.
Buterin clarified that the Stoner Cats initiative, spearheaded by Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, was significantly more respectable than any of the 2024 celebrity memecoin trends. He stated, “At least the Stoner Cats funded a legitimate production, in contrast to the memecoins, devoid of substance and purpose.”
A list of features a celebrity crypto project should possess to earn the esteem of the Ethereum founder was provided. Buterin stated that the project must have a distinct public benefit objective that extends beyond the enrichment of early investors and celebrities as a list component.
Buterin preferred durable celebrity token initiatives that last for at least ten years, as opposed to those that are temporarily popular for a few months and subsequently forgotten. He stated that he prioritizes sustainable, long-term initiatives over transient trends.
Buterin elucidated that a celebrity token should encompass features that are more than just trading. Despite his disapproval of token-voting decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), he stated that they at least offer activities and a sense of community for individuals. He also emphasized that the DAO should not ultimately dictate the agenda but have a certain degree of influence.
The MOTHER token was introduced by Azalea on May 28, which continued a trend of celebrities launching memecoins on Solana that had been ongoing for several weeks. Also recently, tokens have been issued by adult content models Kazumi and Ivana Knöll, musicians Soul Ja Boy and Rich The Kid, and Caitlyn Jenner.
Entrepreneur Sahil Arora has been accused of defrauding several personalities following the launch. Arora has refuted any wrongdoing in the token launches in response. On May 28, Azalea declared that her token unveiling was unrelated to Arora.
The Nigerian crypto community also expressed dissatisfaction with Davido’s recently launched meme token, DAVIDO, an Afro-pop personality. Some community members have suggested that a token drop may be included in his plans.
