Wing Starts Drone Delivery of Blood Samples in London

Alphabet X subsidiary Wing confirmed on Wednesday that it had initiated the delivery of blood samples via drone

The program, announced in September, is responsible for transporting samples between St. Thomas’ Hospital in London and Guy’s Hospital in London.

From Monday to Friday, Wing conducts up to ten deliveries daily. Approximately three minutes are required for each test, which may include a variety of samples. Initially, the emphasis is on patients undergoing surgery with prospective bleeding disorders.

The healthcare sector offers a substantial potential market for drone deliveries in the future. In the past, the primary objective was to supply products to rural areas that were difficult to access and underserved by current medical services.

Nevertheless, Wing’s methodology introduces the technology to one of the world’s most

In major cities, congestion presents obstacles to the timely and secure delivery of goods.

“We have been delighted to witness the tremendous enthusiasm surrounding these patient-first operations as we have finalized our validations and have commenced the distribution of blood samples that physicians will utilize to render clinical decisions for their patients,” states Wing.

“We have received a warm reception in South London, from introducing our aircraft and operational approach at community events to meeting NHS professionals who have seamlessly integrated drone delivery into their daily operations.”

In October 2023, Amazon, which operates Prime Air, one of Wing’s largest competitors, implemented same-day medication delivery in specific U.S. markets. Nevertheless, expanding into new markets has been sluggish because companies have had to navigate regulations in the healthcare and commercial airspace sectors.
