Appfigures data shows Elon Musk’s X struggles with new Android installs even as App Store downloads grow.
According to recent data from Appfigures, an app intelligence provider, Elon Musk’s X is experiencing difficulty with new installations on Android devices, despite an increase in App Store downloads.
In July 2025, the number of X downloads on Google Play experienced a substantial decrease, with a 44% year-over-year decrease in new installs worldwide. This occurred despite a 15% increase in iOS downloads.
As of July, the total number of mobile downloads has decreased by 26% year over year due to the significant decline in installations, which is affecting X’s overall average.
This is still marginally better than the previous month when total downloads had decreased by 35%. This was due to a further significant decline in Android downloads, down by nearly half (49%) year-over-year.

The company did not provide any further information regarding the decline in Android device sales, except to mention that the X app on Android is a known issue.
Nikita Bier, the recently appointed head of product at X, has suggested that the company consider addressing the issues with its Android app, which is notoriously buggy and frequently crashes. Bier is known for his success in growth hacking adolescent social apps such as Gas and TBH, which he subsequently sold.
Bier announced on the platform that X was recruiting for its “Android Dream Team” to assist in reconstructing the X Android app.
Additionally, he recently announced that the iOS app for X had experienced a record-breaking week in terms of installations, possibly to divert attention from the significant Android decline.

The destination of prospective X Android users is unclear. In recent months, rival Bluesky has experienced a decline in growth, and its Google Play app received only 119,000 downloads in July.
That is a far cry from the millions of times X is installed on iOS or Android each month. Nevertheless, Meta’s Threads’ daily active users have been catching up to X on mobile devices, so that some Android users may be accounted for.
Appfigures discovered that X is experiencing difficulty in increasing its subscription revenue, in addition to the decrease in Google Play installations.
X’s net revenue in July was $16.9 million, a decrease from the $18.8 million it generated in March 2025. Nevertheless, this represented a modest increase from the $16.8 million it generated in June. (Indeed, advertisements continue to develop the preponderance of X’s revenue instead of in-app premium subscriptions.)
X is likely losing paying customers to Grok, in addition to the declining demand for X on Android, which is partially responsible for the revenue declines. The latter now has a standalone application that appeals to individuals purchasing X subscriptions primarily for the AI benefits.
