Mark Zuckerberg says AI increased time spent on Facebook by 7% and Instagram by 6% in Q2, boosting engagement across Meta apps.
In the second quarter, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg attributed the increased time users spent on the company’s applications to artificial intelligence.
Meta asserts that AI systems are improving their ability to assist users in connecting with recommended content, even though consumers are increasingly vocal about the prevalence of “AI slop” — low-quality AI-generated content that is saturating social apps.
Zuckerberg informed investors during the Q2 earnings call that “AI is substantially enhancing our capacity to present content that is both engaging and beneficial.”

“The quality of our recommendation systems has been significantly enhanced, resulting in a 5% increase in time spent on Facebook and a 6% increase on Instagram this quarter.”
In June, Meta estimated that over 3.4 billion individuals utilized one of its “family of apps,” which includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and/or WhatsApp, daily.
This figure has increased by 6% year over year and has contributed to the total family of applications revenue reaching $47.1 billion, a 22% increase yearly.
The company also disclosed that video time spent increased by 20% year over year in the quarter, which was also attributed to the optimization of Meta’s ranking systems and its efforts to promote more original content on Instagram.
Meta also observed that Threads, Meta’s X competitor, was experiencing time-expended gains due to the “incorporation of LLMs.”
