OpenAI May Debut AI Agents in January

An AI agent instrument could be released by OpenAI as early as January

Bloomberg claims that OpenAI is on the brink of releasing software code-named “Operator” that can perform direct actions on an individual’s computer. According to reports, OpenAI intends to introduce Operator as a research prototype via its developer API.

Among others, Operator would compete with Anthropic’s recently unveiled agent feature, Computer Use, and Google’s rumored consumer-focused agent. It is uncertain whether OpenAI will have any advantage; Bloomberg suggests it could be a general-purpose tool that executes duties in a web browser.

The report on Operator was received the same day as the publication of OpenAI’s policy paper, which contained recommendations for the United States AI strategy. The document reportedly suggests, among other things, that the federal government establish AI-focused “economic zones” to construct AI infrastructure and form a bloc with U.S. allies to compete with China in AI.
